When do you need a 120 mm pallet instead of 144 mm?
Three real-world situations call for a low 120 mm pallet:
- Racking designed for low clearance: older or imported racking built for 120 mm pallets - it cannot be modified, so the pallet must match
- Height-limited containers: a 20' Standard container (2.39 m internal height) with taller-than-usual goods - cutting 24 mm of pallet height creates meaningful extra space
- Low hand pallet trucks: some hand pallet trucks have a maximum lift height of 115-120 mm and need a matching pallet height so the forks can slide in

For warehouse managers, every millimeter of pallet height multiplied by the number of rack tiers creates real savings. Concrete example: a warehouse with 200 racks x 4 tiers = 800 pallet positions, 8 m tall, currently using 144 mm pallets. Goods plus pallet per tier = 1,600 mm, so 4 tiers fit (6,400 mm < 8,000 mm). Frequently asked questions
Is a 120 mm pallet weaker than a 144 mm pallet?
Not necessarily. Load capacity depends on the cross-section of the timber, not the foot height. A 120 mm pallet uses lower feet but the deckboards can be made thicker to compensate. In practice, 120 mm and 144 mm pallets of the same wood spec usually carry comparable loads within a 5-10% margin. The exact load is stated in the order specification.
Can 120 mm and 144 mm pallets be mixed in the same warehouse?
Physically: yes. But it is not recommended, as it complicates management and handling. Forklifts must adjust fork heights differently and the WMS must record two distinct types. If you are converting a warehouse from 144 mm to 120 mm, do it zone by zone to avoid mixing. Compare with the 1200x800x120 mm pallet or the standard 144 mm size.
