ICD Vietnam's 5-step reconditioning process
Not all "reconditioning" is equal. ICD Vietnam's process has five steps with a quality check at each one:
- Step 1 - Inbound inspection and grading: each pallet is checked by hand. Pallets damaged beyond 30% of their structure are rejected - reconditioning them costs more than their value
- Step 2 - Replace damaged boards: every deckboard and stringer that is cracked, broken, rotten or warped beyond 5 mm is replaced with new wood of the same type and size
- Step 3 - Re-nail and re-tighten: all loose or lifted nails are re-driven or replaced. Bolts (if any) are tightened to standard torque
- Step 4 - Flatten and sand: the deckboard surface is sanded to remove raised splinters and sharp edges - important for electronics and delicate packaging
- Step 5 - Load test: a 5% sample is load-tested at 800 kg for 60 seconds before dispatch

For procurement teams, a 3-year cost analysis makes the advantage clear: a new Acacia pallet at 300,000-350,000 VND each with a 5-year life = 70,000 VND/each/year. A reconditioned pallet at 240,000 VND each with 1.5 extra years = 160,000 VND/each/year. But if your warehouse already holds Grade B used pallets needing reconditioning (rather than buying new), reconditioning at 80,000-120,000 VND each for 1.5 extra years of life = 53,000-80,000 VND/each/year - the cheapest of all options. Prioritise reconditioning your existing pallet fleet before ordering new.
For warehouse managers: signs a pallet needs reconditioning now
For warehouse managers, spotting pallets that need reconditioning early avoids accidents and cargo damage. Five signs a pallet needs reconditioning now: (1) one or more deckboards cracked across more than 50% of their width - risk of breaking under full load; (2) nails lifting 5 mm or more out of the wood - scratching cargo and injuring staff; (3) a foot cracked lengthwise - load not evenly distributed; (4) the pallet warped more than 15 mm along its length - cargo prone to sliding; (5) grey-white mould on the wood surface. On any of these signs, isolate the pallet immediately and send it for reconditioning or scrapping.

Are reconditioned pallets safe in racking systems?
Yes - provided the load stays within the tested limit (no more than 1,000 kg/pallet for the standard reconditioned grade). For high-load racking above 1,500 kg/pallet, use new pallets for maximum safety. Ask ICD Vietnam about a special reconditioning spec for heavy racking applications if needed.
Can I send my warehouse pallets to ICD for reconditioning?
Yes - ICD Vietnam reconditions customers' used pallets from 100 pieces upwards. The quote is based on actual condition after inspection (typically 80,000-150,000 VND each depending on damage).
